A thin-fingered, clawed hand had Cail by the throat and was pinning him down – from underneath the ground.

Before Rinna could even scream, another limb, this one ending in a flat disc-like appendage, rose up from the earth and clamped itself over Cail's chest. Just before it touched him, Rinna saw a glint of teeth underneath the limb, arranged in a circular pattern, like a leech.

A concentrated warmth and crackling noises awoke him. His eyes opened reluctantly, their lids like stone, and he blinked a few times to clear his bleary vision. It was night time; a small vigorous fire of burning rocks flickered at his side. He looked around the immediate vicinity. He was an enclosed and well-hidden grove of trees, where the bushes grew thick on all sides. He could hear the Ebun River in the distance.
